Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ Rules ‘Tomb Raider’ to Claim Fifth Top Weekend

Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” will score a rare fifth weekend at the top of the domestic box office with $27 million from 3,834 locations, beating out Warner Bros.’ “Tomb Raider,” which will open with about $22 million from 3,854 sites.

Black Panther” has continued to break records across the box office, having brought in $585 million domestically in its first 29 days. This weekend’s take will represent the fourth-highest fifth weekend of all time, and the first time a film has held the top spot for five weekends in a row since 2009’s “Avatar,” which dominated for a total of seven weeks.

Tomb Raider,” a reboot of the Lara Croft franchise and starring Alicia Vikander, took in $2.1 million Thursday for a Friday total of $9 million. The current prediction is just under early tracking, which placed the action film’s opening between $23 and $25 million. As of Friday, the film has earned $45.6 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $54.6 million.

Based on the 2013 game, the film is directed by Roar Uthaug and written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, from a story by Evan Daugherty and Robertson-Dworet, and also stars Walton Goggins and Dominic West. Reviews have been mixed, with a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B CinemaScore.

In third place is the second weekend of Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” starring Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling, with almost $16 million from 3,980 theaters. The number marks a nearly 51% decline from the film’s debut.

The opening weekend of faith-based “I Can Only Imagine” from Roadside-Lionsgate will place a close fourth with $15 million from 1,692 locations. “I Can Only Imagine” is performing far above initial estimates, which predicted $4 million and were recast to $8 million.

The film tells the story behind one of Christian rock’s best-known songs, “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe and written by Bart Millard. Despite a 55% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film sports a 95% audience score. Directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin, the film stars J. Michael Finley as Millard, Dennis Quaid, and Trace Adkins.

Fox’s “Love, Simon” is set to reel in $12 million in its first weekend, landing the teen romance film in fifth. Nick Robinson stars as a closeted gay teenager who begins communicating online with an anonymous classmate. “Simon” has earned a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“7 Days in Etebbe’s” limited release has drawn about $1.8 million from 838 locations. The film from Focus Features recounts Operation Entebbe, a 1976 mission led by Israeli soldiers to rescue more than 240 hostages from an airport in Entebbe, Uganda. Rosamund Pike and Daniel Bruhl star in the docudrama, helmed by Jose Padilha and written by Gregory Burke. Critics have not been pleased with the film, resulting in a 19% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Priyanka Chopra & Meghan Markle’s Friendship Timeline Is Surprisingly Short

Priyanka Chopra & Meghan Markle’s Friendship Timeline Is Surprisingly Short

Priyanka Chopra and Meghan Markle seem like they’ve been friends for a lifetime. When Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November 2017, Chopra was one of the first to send a sweet congrats on Instagram to her friend who would soon be a member of the royal family. There are very few people in the world who can call Prince Harry “my good friend’s fiancé.” Despite their close friendship, though, the timeline of Priyanka Chopra and Meghan Markle’s friendship is surprisingly short — they met just two years ago, but they’ve gotten super close since then.

But everyone has friends they click with immediately, even if they haven’t know them too long. Chopra and Markle really do seem like a match made in heaven. Both women are actors — Chopra on Quantico and Markle, until recently, on Suits. And both women are are very passionate about their philanthropic work, which is something Markle will not only be able to continue as a member of the royal family, but expand with her new global platform. She’s advocated for a number of causes, especially fighting for gender equality. Chopra is also a champion of rights for women and girls, and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. It’s no wonder the two women get along. Take a look at their short, but very sweet friendship.

January 2016 — Their Meet Cute

Chopra and Markle, both strong and powerful women, appropriately met at an event for strong and powerful women. They both attended Elle‘s Women In Television Celebration dinner in January 2016, where they hit it off right away. “We bonded as actors,” Chopra told People in September 2017. “We just became friends, as two girls would.”

Markle was similarly complimentary about Chopra. In an interview with The Indian Express in 2016, she said of her new friend Chopra, “Priyanka is unbelievable, she’s become a really good friend.” Of the night they met at the Elle dinner, Markle said Chopra turned out to be a big fan of her show, Suits, and it was really platonic love at first sight. “You know when you meet someone and you just click…it was an easy, natural progression,” Markle said.

2016 — Just Hanging Out Like Friends Do

Both women were very busy with their own individual projects, but Markle said in her interview that they stay in touch and try to get together whenever they are in the same city. That’s one of the hardest parts of friendship as adults — coordinating schedules, especially when you don’t live in the same place, so props to these women for putting in the effort.

Later in 2016 they were just doing some good old friend stuff. Chopra and Markle went to see Hamilton together, which luckily there’s evidence of on Chopra’s Instagram. Because when you join the royal family, you don’t have personal social media accounts anymore, so Markle deleted her Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook in January 2018. She’d deleted her website, The Tig, nine months earlier. But, the Daily Mail managed to grab some screenshots of some of Markle’s last ‘grams, and one of them was a throwback to a photo of her, Chopra, and another close friend, producer Mubina Rattonsey that Chopra had re-posted on her Instagram back in 2016 (above).

2017 — Priyanka Always Stands Up For Her Girl

Wendy Williams on YouTube

Sadly, there weren’t many photos of the two friends from 2017. Still, Chopra went to bat for her friend time and again, like when she appeared on The Wendy Williams Show in May. When Williams called Markle “Prince Harry’s girlfriend,” Chopra fired back with: “Also Meghan Markle ― actress, Suits, her achievements.” Because she’s defined by so much more than her relationship, even if it is to a prince.

Chopra came out swinging again after Markle’s Vanity Fair cover story came out in October 2017, just a month before she and Harry announced their engagement. Chopra told Entertainment Tonight that she was disappointed that the article mainly focused on Markle’s relationship. “I mean, she’s on the cover of Vanity Fair,” Chopra said. “It would have been nice to write about her not just her boyfriend. I’m just saying. I mean, she’s an actor, she’s an activist, she’s a philanthropist. I mean, she does so much more.” That’s a ride or die friend right there.

The two seem so close that there’s even some speculation that Chopra will be one of Markle’s bridesmaids. But Chopra isn’t giving away any answers yet. She was asked about it in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, and she coyly responded, “If you see me there, you’ll know.” Which is maddening, but it’s definitely not a no.

Whether or not Chopra is going to stand by her friend’s side on May 19, she’s so happy for her. She told Harper’s there’s nobody better for the job of a duchess: “She’s an icon, truly, that girls can look up to.” Markle and Prince Harry might be getting married, but it seems like Markle and Chopra love each other just as much.

Hugh Grant just became a father for the fifth time, ex Elizabeth Hurley reveals

Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley, one of the it-couples of the 1990s, may have ended their 13-year romantic relationship two decades ago, but they remain best friends. Which means she is often the media’s best source of personal news about the notoriously press-averse Grant.

She served in this capacity during her Thursday visit to Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live.

Asked what it’s been like to see the curmudgeonly Grant father so many kids in the space of six years, she revealed, “He just had another one last week.”

It’s his fifth child and third with his current girlfriend, Swedish television producer Anna Eberstein. Grant and Eberstein’s elder children are 5 and 3.

He also has a 6-year-old daughter, Tabitha, and 5-year-old son, Felix, from his relationship with ex-girlfriend Tinglan Hong.

Grant, whom Hurley’s friends used to call “Grumplestiltskin” has morphed into an  “enchanting dad,” she said. “Having all these kids has actually transformed him from a very miserable person to a fairly miserable person. It’s an improvement. He’s gone up the scale.”

Representatives for Grant did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

Michael B. Jordan: Inclusion rider will apply to all of my company’s projects

When Michael B. Jordan isn’t offering to pay for replacement retainers for teenagers who have clenched their teeth too hard during his shirtless “Black Panther” scene, he’s working to make Hollywood more inclusive.

At the Oscars on Sunday, Frances McDormand, who won an Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” delivered a rousing acceptance speech that ended with the term “inclusion rider” (and a mic drop). Her mention of the term — a practice that involves writing a requirement that a cast and crew be diverse into an actor’s contract, or asking the same of the film’s producers — drew a wave of interest after the awards show.

Jordan, 31, has pledged to apply the practice to all of the projects that come out of his production company, Outlier Society.

“In support of the women & men who are leading this fight, I will be adopting the Inclusion Rider for all projects produced by my company Outlier Society,” he posted on Instagram Wednesday. “I’ve been privileged to work with powerful woman (sic) & persons of color throughout my career & it’s Outlier’s mission to continue to create for talented individuals going forward.”

McDormand, who asked all female nominees in every category to stand during her Oscars acceptance speech, has certainly done a lot in just a few days to popularize the idea of the rider, even without defining the term for the audience. But Stacy Smith, director of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the University of Southern California, is credited with introducing the term and helping actors work such agreements into their contracts alongside civil rights attorney Kalpana Kotagal.

“It stipulates that in small and supporting roles, characters should reflect the world we live in,” Smith told Vanity Fair after the Oscars. The requirement would also apply to “below the line” (non-acting, writing and directing) positions on a film’s crew.

Jordan directed his followers to a link to the Inclusion Initiative in his Instagram bio.

The actor, who grew up in Newark, plays villain Erik Killmonger in the Marvel movie “Black Panther” and will return as Adonis Johnson in “Creed II” this fall opposite Tessa Thompson, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren and Florian Munteanu. He started Outlier Society in 2016.

Outlier Society productions currently include the upcoming “The Thomas Crown Affair” remake that will have Jordan starring the the lead role, the forthcoming Netflix series “Raising Dion,” in which he will have a role, and a film adaptation of the YA novel “The Stars Beneath Our Feet” that will see Jordan in the director’s chair for the first time.
